Upkeeper Solves Sticky Situation at Wal-Mart Food Distribution Center

At their six-story food distribution center, Wal-Mart would occasionally have to deal with spillages of everything from spaghetti sauce to sugar. While a large ride-on sweeper was effective in cleaning the aisles between the pallet racks, the Facilities Manager had no way to clean the pallets and the racks. After trying to use a shop vac with a portable generator, Upkeeper was called in to find a more effective and convenient solution.

Upkeeper’s Cleaning Assessment Program determined the shop vac lacked the suction power or capacity to effectively handle large, bulky debris or accumulated debris under the pallet racks. In addition, the generator was both noisy and cumbersome, but there were no power accessible outlets in the entire 800,000 square foot facility.

To solve the problem, Upkeeper fabricated special tools to better access the pallet racks from the floor up to the 25-foot overhead. To solve the power problem, Upkeeper utilized a power inverter attached to one of their numerous available battery-powered pallet jacks.

Upkeeper Corporation has offered its Cleaning Assessment Program for a number of years. In Wal-Mart’s case, the entire project was accomplished by using the Cleaning Assessment Form as a basis. Subsequent e-mails and phone calls further refined the nature of the problem, and the Wal-Mart Facility Manager provided digital photos via the internet. Once a solution was determined, the equipment was shipped to the Wal-Mart facility for testing and approval.
Upkeeper effected further modifications and refinements until the equipment met the unique needs of the customer.
The response to the Upkeeper Cleaning Assessment Program has been tremendous and has resulted in many product improvements to the Upkeeper product line.
